The company of the same name, founded in The Hague in 1748, served as a direct model for the Grande Société in Bern. Among the first members of the Hague Grande Société were twelve Bernese officers in Dutch service. Some of them were among the founders of the “Grande Société de Berne” in 1759.
The Property Hôtel de Musique was built in 1769 by members of the Cercle de la Grande Société. For this purpose they founded the Hôtel de Musique Ltd, the oldest public limited company in Switzerland still in existence today. Since then, the social life of the Cercle has taken place in the salons on the first floor of Place du Théâtre 7. Today, as then, the Cercles’ interiors offer members and visitors an elegant and warm welcome. It is the mission of the Grande Société to bring its interiors to life and to preserve them.
